1. Introduction

The Adult Numeracy Platform ("we", "our", "us") is a research project conducted as part of a Masters thesis at the University of Galway. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you use our platform.

2. Data We Collect

We collect the following types of data:

  • Survey Responses: Your answers to pre- and post-study questionnaires about numeracy attitudes and experiences
  • Gameplay Data: Scores, choices made during games, time spent on activities, and difficulty levels
  • Session Information: A randomly generated session identifier and timestamps of when you accessed the platform
  • Technical Data: Browser type and device category (desktop/mobile/tablet) for ensuring compatibility

3. Data We Do NOT Collect

  • Third-party tracking cookies or advertising identifiers
  • Social media profiles or login credentials
  • Financial or payment information

4. Local Storage

This platform uses your browser's local storage (not cookies) to:

  • Store authentication tokens for researcher access (if applicable)

Local storage data remains on your device and is not automatically transmitted to our servers. You can clear this data at any time through your browser settings.

5. How We Use Your Data

Data collected is used solely for:

  • Academic research into adult numeracy education
  • Improving the educational effectiveness of our games
  • Statistical analysis of learning outcomes
  • Publishing anonymised, aggregated findings in academic papers

6. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored securely on servers within the European Economic Area (EEA). We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect against unauthorised access, alteration, or destruction of data. All data transmissions are encrypted using HTTPS.

7. Data Retention

Research data is retained for the duration of the study plus an additional period required by academic publishing standards (typically 5-10 years). Session data may be automatically anonymised after 90 days. You may request deletion of your session data at any time by contacting us with your session identifier.

8. Your Rights (GDPR)

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right to:

  • Access the data we hold about your session
  • Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data ("right to be forgotten")
